1988 [ Summit | Japan / Vow ]

[28]

I wanted to summit Mauna Loa
before I left Hawaii. Dad said, Only if you
hike with someone.
Lynn offered. I told her
No, but don’t know why.

[88]

I’m in Misawa, Japan with the Navy
at the “pointy end of the spear,” vowing
that I’m going to get out. I will, but not yet.
The exchange rate is awful. I love
the country, note how the people
are uniformly polite and helpful, despite
my limited knowledge of Japanese.

In northern Japan, I marvel at massive
Hirosaki Castle and all the cherry blossoms,
and renew my fondness for sushi and hot sake.

After a long bus ride, I climb Mount Fuji
for the sunrise. It is glorious.
