Prayer for Peace, Padden Creek Estuary

Qué la paz prevalezca en la tierra
May peace prevail on earth

The peace prayer pole has been there —
just above the point where Padden Creek
enters its estuary at high tide —
for as long as I can remember. Its simple,
profound message is a prayer in Spanish
and English, and two other languages.

When I walk down to the sea via estuary
edge, I pause at the peace prayer pole,
place my hand next to these sacred words,
bow my head, say the prayer out loud
in Spanish
Qué la paz prevalezca en la tierra

and then in English
May peace prevail on earth.

I begin with myself, thank the Divine,
ask for help in being at peace with myself,
in working for peace on behalf of all people,
all peoples, and all nations.

Qué
May

la paz
peace

prevalezca
prevail

en la tierra
on earth

  1. Alas, formatting broke down. That’s OK, though (sigh).
