Happy National Poetry Month, April 2013

with a nod to, and a line from, the poet James Bertolino

Today is Tax Day.
More importantly, it’s a day
during National Poetry Month, April 2013.

My favorite bookstore
offers a 20 percent discount
on books of poetry throughout the month.

I purchase a couple
of books of poetry, and savor
the 20 percent discount. I purchase

Poet in New York,
poems by Federico Garcia Lorca
written while he was in New York City, 1929-1930.

I also purchase
an anthology, Alive at the Center:
Contemporary Poems from the Pacific Northwest
.

It collects selected poems
of Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver,
British Columbia. New York City, Portland,

Seattle, and Vancouver, B.C.?
Why not Bellingham, Washington?
I wonder. Where’s the harm there? I ask.

Happy National Poetry Month, April 2013.
