The Quotidian, July 13, 2010 ~ The Necessity for Poetry

“… it is difficult / to get the news from poems / yet every day men die miserably / for lack / of what is found there.”

 – William Carlos Williams (1883 – 1963) [From “Asphodel, That Greeny Flower” (1955)]

I would add not only men, but women and children too.

It is essential that we support poets and poetry readings. Attend open microphone events where you live. Listen and read your poems and / or favorite poems by others. Support businesses financially which host or sponsor open mic events; chances are, those businesses are hosting or sponsoring at a loss. If there is no open mic series in your community, start one!

Additionally, support of poetry in public spaces is vital.  Organizations such as Poetry Night in Bellingham, WA and Pop Up Poets (PUP) in New York City are engaged in essential  work in bringing poetry to the public and at times in surprising venues. Please support these organizations and other organizations bringing poets to schools.
